Susana Lopez Charreton

Mexican Virologist, Laureate of the 2012 L'OréalUNESCO for Women in Science International Awards (Latin America)

Dr. Lopez is a professor of virology in the Institute of Biotechnology at the National University of Mexico. She has dedicated her professional life to the study of viruses that cause gastrointestinal diseases in children, mainly rotaviruses and astroviruses. She is interested in characterizing the interactions between virus and host-cells that lead to a productive infection. Her group is also involved in the diagnosis, epidemiology, and metagenomic characterization of emergent viral diseases. Dr. López is very interested in science communication and has co-authored 3 illustrated books for children. She was awarded with the TWAS prize in Biology in 2008 and was selected as the For Woman in Science Laureate for Latin America in 2012 by the L´Oreal/UNESCO foundation. Dr. López is member of the Mexican Academy of Science and of the Latin-American Science Academy. In April 2021 she became a member of El Colegio Nacional.
